Taking Back Our Stolen History
Rumsfeld, Donald
Rumsfeld, Donald

Rumsfeld, Donald

(July 9, 1932 – June 30, 2021) a deep state politician, a Bilderberger with strong ties to the Intelligence Community as well as to the Atlantic Institute, and two-time Secretary of Defense [under Ford (1975-77) & Bush#2 (2001-06)] and Gerald Ford’s White House Chief of Staff. He has had a revolving door between politics, big pharma and the military industrial complex where he has lined his pockets with hundreds of millions of dollars. He pushed the 1976 swine flu hoax, pushed the carcinogen aspartame to get passed by the FDA after being denied twice, sold the Iraq War and continuously promoted the phony war on terror, profited immensely while in office from fake bird and swine flu pandemics that pushed and purchased millions of doses of Tamiflu, made by a company he was formerly CEO and still held tens of millions in stock.

In his second term as Secretary, Rumsfeld showed an intense, unwavering commitment to military transformation—his vision of a leaner, more lethal Department of Defense. He performed brilliantly for the press and won over public opinion. However inside the Pentagon, he ran roughshod over the most experienced generals and admirals, who resented his resistance to professional advice. After 9-11, he directed the War in Afghanistan, which seemingly vindicated this concept of transformation. While the prospect of war in Iraq in 2003 promised a wider proving ground for it, the unexpected counterinsurgency campaign that followed undermined Rumsfeld’s transformation and highlighted his failures in planning and his resistance to changing policies. In late 2006, Bush fired Rumsfeld, replacing him with Robert Gates, who changed strategies and commanders, thus calming the Iraq insurgency.

Open Secrets reports that Rumsfeld has also served on the boards of ABB Ltd. (Asea Brown Boveri), Gulfstream AerospaceMotorola (bought out General Instrument), General DynamicsAllstateKelloggSears, Roebuck & Co., and Tribune Company. In 1997, Gilead Sciences reported that Rumsfeld was then an adviser to Metricom, Inc..

A December 28, 2000, CBS News report on Rumsfeld stated that he was not only serving as chairman of the board of directors of Gilead Sciences, but was also serving “as a member of the boards of directors of ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) Ltd., Tribune Company and RAND Corporation“; was “currently chairman of the Salomon Smith Barney International Advisory Board”; served as a member of the board of directors of Amylin Pharmaceuticals (1991-1996); chairman and chief executive officer of General Instrument Corporation (October 1990 to August 1993); and “served as a senior advisor to William Blair & Co., an investment banking firm” (1985-1990).”

“As a director for Gulfstream Aerospace, his stock in the company reportedly was valued at $11 million when the company was acquired by defense contractor General Dynamics in 1999. But Rumsfeld scrupulously avoided any direct dealings with defense companies, either serving on boards or purchasing stock, a decision that helped to avoid the appearance of impropriety when he was asked to lead the Defense Department again,” Open Secrets reports

Gilead Sciences

“Rummy was Chair of the Board of Directors at Gilead Sciences until named to the Bush cabinet and, like [Vice President Dick] Cheney, still has ties that bind to the ‘old company.’ Now wasn’t it an ‘amazing coincidence’ that the drug Tamiflu patented by Gilead Sciences was being pushed by the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases as the NUMBER ONE choice for flu, which, wonder of wonders, is sweeping through in one epidemic after another,” Free Market News related October 21, 2005, from a January 2004 web posting.

As of September 22, 2004, Rumsfeld held a “stake in Gilead Sciences Inc. worth $5 million to $25 million.” [4]
Incidentally, Newsday reported October 22, 2005, that, according to drug makers, Tamiflu “will remain in short supply for as long as a year because of the drug’s complicated chemistry.”
The delay is perhaps related to the controversy over property rights to the Tamiflu patent. See Dr. Joseph Mercola’s “Who Owns the Rights on Tamiflu: Rumsfeld To Profit From Bird Flu Hoax,” Global Research, October 26, 2005: “Since Rumsfeld holds major portions of stock in Gilead, he will handsomely profit from the scare tactics of the government that is being used to justify the purchase of $2 billion of Tamiflu.”

According to its January 3, 1997, press release announcing Rumsfeld’s ascension to Chairman of the Board, Rumsfeld had been with Gilead Sciences “as a stalwart board member since the company’s earliest days” in 1988.

“Gilead is fortunate to have had Don Rumsfeld,” said Michael L. Riordan, M.D., “who founded Gilead in 1987 and [had] served as Chairman since 1993,” … “and we are very pleased that he has accepted the Chairmanship. … He has played an important role in helping to build and steer the company. His broad experience in leadership positions in both industry and government will serve us well as Gilead continues to build its commercial presence.’

Rumsfeld served as Gilead’s Chairman of the Board until January 22, 2001. Upon his departure, John C. Martin, Ph.D., Gilead’s President and CEO, said “Don Rumsfeld’s insight and contributions over the last twelve years have been invaluable as Gilead has evolved from a promising biotech company into the worldwide biopharmaceutical corporation it is today.” [5]

“In January 1997, Donald Rumsfeld, a Board member since 1988, was appointed Chairman of the company [Gilead Science, the developer of Tamiflu]. He stood down from the Board in January 2001 when appointed United States Secretary of Defense at the start of George W. Bush’s first term as President. Federal disclosure forms indicate that Rumsfeld owned between US$5 million and US$25 million in Gilead stock. The rise in Gilead’s share prices from US$35 to US$57 per share will have added between US$2.5 million to US$15.5 million to Rumsfeld’s net worth.”   Taken from a Halloween 2005 article on CNN Money by By Nelson D. Schwartz, of Fortune (Rumsfeld’s Growing Stake in Tamiflu).

Donald Rumsfeld was also a major stock holder and former CEO of Gilead Sciences Inc., which was the sole patent owner of Tamiflu. ‘Tamiflu’, is an antiviral prescription medication, in pill form. This drug was made and marketed by Hoffmann–La Roche Holding AG of Switzerland, but was developed by Gilead Sciences Inc. of California in 1996.

From 1977 to 1985, Rumsfeld served as Chief Executive Officer, President, and then Chairman of G. D. Searle & Company, a worldwide pharmaceutical company that is the maker of aspartame, and which was based in Skokie, Illinois. For over sixteen years, the FDA refused to approve aspartame because of the seizures and brain tumors this drug produced in lab animals.  Among other influential positions, the scum bag sat on the board of a technology giant — ABB from 1990 to 2001. In 2000 this company sold two light-water nuclear reactors to North Korea.

Tamiflu was stockpiled by the U.S. Defense Department and millions are made with each new Swine Flu Panic. The US federal government is one of the world’s biggest customers for Tamiflu at the tax-payers expense. Former Sec. of State George Schultz — CFR, Trilateral, and Bilderberg member, was also on the board of Gilead Sciences. According to Fortune, Shultz turned a neat $7 million profit in 2005 in insider selling of some of his Gilead stock. By selling false hope to AIDS patients in poor countries, selling bogus smallpox treatments to the US government, and taking millions from Bill Gates to test HIV drugs on poor people in Cambodia, Africa, and India, Rummy nearly quadrupled profits for Gilead Sciences within just a little more than his first 2 years in the Bush administration as Sec. of Defense.

In 2006, George Bush signed into law the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act as part of the 2006 Defense Appropriations Act (HR 2863). This law; lets the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)  Secretary declare any disease an epidemic or national emergency requiring mandatory vaccinations. But, nothing in this Act lists any criteria that warrant a threat. Nor does it list any potential penalties for those who balk and or refuse to get it.

Now let’s see how all of this plays out.

 1. The Swine Flu Vaccine Scam / Poisoning

Ironically, at Rumsfeld’s urging, in 1976, President Ford called for a national inoculation against swine flu. The $135 million program proclaimed that ‘every man, woman and child’; should be vaccinated. Huge amounts of vaccine were produced and distributed quickly and the government assumed all liability from side-effects.

Several older people died within hours, after taken the shot; from heart attacks. There were also reports of the vaccine touching off neurological problems, especially rare ‘Guillain-Barre’ syndrome. Eventually, the government suspended the program, after inoculating 40 million people for a flu that never came. It was known as the ‘Swine Flu Fiasco’ or the ‘Swine Flu Debacle’. The strain itself killed one person and hospitalized 13. 300 died from the vaccine itself.

The over-all consequences of the 1976 Swine-Flu scare, are somewhat distorted. It embarrassed the federal government and cost the director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), his job. Why did the U. S. government give its citizens the vaccine known as X53A; which was known to have neurological side- effects?

The U. S. Government was sued and the taxpayers paid again. Whoever made it, was off the hook? Who did the USA pay for this bad/worthless vaccine and why? And, why did Donald Rumsfeld urge the President Ford to go through with it in the first place?

I think we have a right to know all of these facts!  But wait! That was just the beginning of Rumsfeld’s cronyism?

In 2005, President George W. Bush pushed for and won $7.1 billion in emergency funding to prepare for an influenza pandemic that was not even yet on the horizon. Remember, Donald Rumsfeld was AGAIN—- Defense Secretary. The United States placed an order for 20 million doses of Tamiflu at a price of $100 per dose. It cost the taxpayers around $2 billion. Conflict of Interest? Also, in March 2005, Britain’s Tony Blair, ordered the UK Government to buy enough Tamiflu drugs to supply 14 million of its British citizens.

And then, the World Health Organization was hyping up the hysteria by declaring a Swine flu Pandemic; warning that governments worldwide should launch emergency response plans for late 2009 or early 2010 as a pandemic is “imminent.”?

Do You See a Pattern Here? How many billions did our US Government spend on Swine flu to line his pockets? Propaganda from friends in Washington and other high places to instill a scenario of panic by fear-mongering to rob the taxpayers? Go Figure!

2. The Axis of Evil

North Korea ominously warned the USA that: ‘It WILL use its Nuclear Weapons – both to defend itself and as an offense against those who seek to attack the country’? But how did North Korea get the Nuclear Material for its weapons in the first place?

ABB, Donald Rumsfeld and North Korea? TREASON?

Remember, Donald Rumsfeld was on the board of a technology giant — ABB when it won a deal to supply North Korea with two nuclear power plants. Rumsfeld sat on the board of directors of ABB, from 1990 to 2001, until he became Secretary of State again. ABB is a European engineering giant—based in Zürich, Switzerland. In 2000 this company sold two light-water nuclear reactors to North Korea. The sale of this nuclear technology was a high-profile, $200 million dollar contract with Pyongyang, Korea.

Weapons experts warned that waste material from these two reactors could be used for so-called ‘dirty bombs’. According to Wolfram Eberhardt, a spokesman for ABB; Rumsfeld “was at nearly all the board meetings,” during his decade-long involvement with the company. Rumsfeld does not recall the $200 million dollar deal being brought before the board at any time. (Denial or selective memory or a blatant lie?) But ABB spokesman Björn Edlund told Fortune (magazine) that “board members were informed about this project.”

Ironically, in 2002 Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld declared North Korea a terrorist state and a target for regime change. ABB no longer has any involvement with the North Korean power plants. Rumsfeld got paid to help supply North Korea with Nuclear Material and then he declared North Korea part of the so called ‘Axis of Evil’?

Who in their right mind would give Nuclear Material; which could be used for a dirty bomb, to a MAD Man? Especially when he was a former and then again, became the Secretary of Defense for the U.S.A. Some people will do anything for money?

Selling Biological Weapons to Iraq

In January 1981, as CEO of Big Pharma company Searle, Rumsfeld reportedly stated that he would “call in his markers” and make a push to get aspartame approved. Rumsfeld had reportedly hand picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes Jr. to be the new FDA Commissioner for the new president, Ronald Reagan. Hayes appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the safety of aspartame, which voted 3 – 2 decision against, a decision which was reversed in 1981.[2]

In December 1983, still working as a senior executive for G.D. Searle & Co., Rumsfeld was sent by Ronald Reagan to visit the Middle East, including Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War. Rumsfeld arranged for the Iraqis to receive billions of dollars in loans to buy weapons, and made it possible for Iraq to buy supplies from American firms, including viruses such as anthrax and bubonic plague.[3].

3. The Cancer Causing Aspartame

The FDA refused to approve aspartame for sixteen years because it triggers brain tumors—violates the Delaney Amendment; that makes it illegal to allow any residues of cancer-causing chemicals in foods. But, 1n 1981, the FDA magically changes its mind and Approves Aspartame? Why?

In January 1981 Rumsfeld bragged at a sales meeting, according to one attendee, that he would ‘call in his markers’ and get aspartame approved by the end of the year. In 1981 the FDA commissioner’s authority was suspended by the new President of the USA, Ronald Reagan; on his first day in office. One month later, he appointed a new FDA commissioner. Four months later, the new FDA commissioner, Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes (Rumsfeld’s old friend); defying FDA advisors, approved aspartame for dry foods.

It was his first major decision? In November 1983 the FDA approved aspartame for soft drinks. It was Dr. Hayes last decision? Supposedly, he was under fire for accepting corporate gifts; thus he left the agency and went to work for GUESS WHO? He became Searle’s senior medical advisor for their public-relations firm.

Aspartame name was changed to NutraSweet. Rumsfeld received a $12 million bonus. ‘Prior to the approval of aspartame, the FDA sent two specialized teams to G.D. Searle and found a ghastly 95% level of misdirected testing; concealed tests, collusion between corporate and their company-funded research; withholding of material facts; alterations of records: lying to investigators, lost records, no records; falsification of reports, bribery, poor test methodology or design…’

Ironically, but not surprisingly, Donald Rumsfeld – made millions of dollars, at tax-payers expense; because of his position in both the corporate/private sector, and while being Secretary of Defense— two different times? Wow! We the Little People were played as fools as he laughed, joked and lied all the way to the bank! Imagine that! Has cynical become obsolete in our society?

Aspartame is very potentially a cancer and brain tumor-causing substance that has no place in our food. And two, the reasons and means by which Rumsfeld helped get it approved are nefarious at best, criminal at worst. And by the way, that medal that Rumsfeld got back in 2004 was the Presidential Medal of Freedom, also awarded to Tommy Franks, George Tenet and that charming warrior L. Paul Bremer. Evidently, “Freedom” means the right to use your powerful friends in Washington to approve your company’s dangerous substance for human consumption and make a fat bonus on the way out the door. So how did aspartame become legal? And more importantly, if it had been rejected multiple times over fears of brain tumors and cancer, why?

Dr. John Olney, who founded the field of neuroscience called excitotoxicity, attempted to stop the approval of aspartame with Attorney James Turner back in 1996. The FDA’s own toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross told Congress that without a shadow of a doubt, aspartame can cause brain tumors and brain cancer and that it violated the Delaney Amendment, which forbids putting anything in food that is known to cause cancer. According to the top doctors and researchers on this issue, aspartame causes headache, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma and cancer. It worsens or mimics the symptoms of such diseases and conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue and depression. Further dangers highlighted is that aspartame liberates free methyl alcohol. The resulting chronic methanol poisoning affects the dopamine system of the brain causing addiction. Methanol, or wood alcohol, constitutes one third of the aspartame molecule and is classified as a severe metabolic poison and narcotic. How’s that Diet Coke treating you now?

In the peer reviewed journal, Aspartame: Methanol and the Public Health, Dr. Woodrow Monte wrote: “When diet sodas and soft drinks, sweetened with aspartame, are used to replace fluid loss during exercise and physical exertion in hot climates, the intake of methanol can exceed 250 mg/day or 32 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended limit of consumption for this cumulative poison.” The effects of aspartame are documented by the FDA’s own data. In 1995 the agency was forced, under the Freedom of Information Act, to release a list of aspartame symptoms reported by thousands of victims. From 10,000 consumer complaints, the FDA compiled a list of 92 symptoms, including death. Dr. Betty Martini, the founder of Mission Possible International, works with doctors around the world in an effort to remove aspartame from food, drinks and medicine. According to Dr. Martini, aspartame has brought more complaints to the FDA than any other additive and is responsible for 75% of such complaints to that agency.

Martini says NutraSweet is a “deadly neurotoxic drug masquerading as an additive. It interacts with all antidepressants, L-dopa, Coumadin, hormones, insulin, all cardiac medication, and many others. It also is a chemical hyper sensitization drug so that it interacts with vaccines, other toxins, other unsafe sweeteners like Splenda which has a chlorinated base like DDT and can cause auto immune disease. It has a synergistic and additive effect with MSG. Both being excitotoxins, the aspartic acid in aspartame, and MSG, the glutamate people were found using aspartame as the placebo for MSG studies, even before it was approved. The FDA has known this for a quarter of a century and done nothing even though its against the law.”

In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet. Monsanto was apparently untroubled by aspartame’s clouded past, including the report of a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, comprised of three independent scientists, which confirmed that it “might induce brain tumors.” The FDA had previously banned aspartame based on this finding, only to have then-Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld vow to “call in his markers,” to get it approved. Here’s how it happened:

Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president January 21, 1981. Rumsfeld, while still CEO at Searle, was part of Reagan’s transition team. This team hand-picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., to be the new FDA commissioner. Dr. Hayes, a pharmacologist, had no previous experience with food additives before being appointed director of the FDA. On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration, Reagan issued an executive order eliminating the FDA commissioners’ authority to take action and Searle re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame in food sweetener. Hayes, Reagan’s new FDA commissioner, appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the board of inquiry’s decision. It soon became clear that the panel would uphold the ban by a 3-2 decision. So Hayes installed a sixth member on the commission, and the vote became deadlocked. He then personally broke the tie in aspartame’s favor.

One of Hayes’ first official acts as FDA chief was to approve the use of aspartame as an artificial sweetener in dry goods on July 18, 1981. In order to accomplish this feat, Hayes had to overlook the scuttled grand jury investigation of Searle, overcome the Bressler Report, ignore the PBOI’s recommendations and pretend aspartame did not chronically sicken and kill thousands of lab animals. Hayes left his post at the FDA in November, 1983, amid accusations that he was accepting corporate gifts for political favors. Just before leaving office in scandal, Hayes approved the use of aspartame in beverages. After Hayes left the FDA under allegations of impropriety, he served briefly as Provost at New York Medical College, and then took a position as a high-paid senior medical advisor with Burson-Marsteller, the chief public relations firm for both Monsanto and GD Searle. Since that time he has never spoken publicly about aspartame. FYI, here’s Rachel Maddow on Burson-Marsteller: “When Evil needs public relations, Evil has Burson-Marsteller on speed dial.” Evil, thy name is chemical food additives.

Here’s the kicker: When Searle was absorbed by Monsanto in 1985, Donald Rumsfeld reportedly received a $12 million bonus, pretty big money in those days. Also, while at Searle, Rumsfeld was awarded Outstanding CEO in the Pharmaceutical Industry from the Wall Street Transcript (1980) and Financial World (1981)! Imagine that…

9/11

Retired 4-star general Wesley Clark (former supreme commander of NATO forces in Europe 1997-2001) stated in 2001, in the Pentagon, that a general told him: ‘I just received a classified memo from the Secretary of Defense [Rumsfeld]: we will take seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and finally, Iran.’

On September 10th, 2001, one day before the 9/11 false flag attack, Rumsfeld announced the DOD can’t account for 2.3 Trillion USD. Money like this has been missing ever since, every year – by 2020 amounting to 35 Trillion that are not accounted for.[4] Or are they? On the subject of 9/11, when asked about the demolition of WTC 7, Donald Rumsfeld claimed that he had never heard of it.[6] Not True!

Rumsfeld was one of the signers of the January 26, 1998, Project for the New American Century (PNAC) letter sent to President William Jefferson Clinton. [1]

John Solomon, writing March 12, 2004, for the Associated Press, reported that “Rumsfeld Kept 9-11 Souvenir”, an act which BuzzFlash characterizes as both “macabre and disgusting.”

“The Justice Department investigation that criticized FBI agents for taking souvenirs from the World Trade Center site also found that Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and a high-ranking FBI official kept items from the Sept. 11 attack scenes.
“The final investigatory report said the Justice Department inspector general confirmed Rumsfeld ‘has a piece of the airplane that flew into the Pentagon.’
“The Justice Department investigation also collected testimony that Pasquale D’Amuro, FBI Director Robert Mueller’s executive assistant director for terrorism until last summer, asked a supervisory agent to ‘obtain a half dozen items from the WTC debris so the items could be given to dignitaries.'”

Torture

Donald Rumsfeld was an enthusiastic supporter of “enhanced interrogation“, and his tenure as US Defense Secretary was marked by torture and the events of Abu Ghraib. He was convicted for these crimes in 2012 by the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission.[8]

In June 2013 the US Supreme Court confirmed a federal appeals court ruling by ruling that Rumsfeld cannot be held liable for any illegal actions of his subordinates. He was being sued for personally authorizing “enhanced interrogation” techniques, the court ruled that US military officials are immune to civil lawsuits over torture.[9][10]

Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, the former U.S. commander of the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq until early 2004, “was quoted as saying in Spain’s El País newspaper that she had seen a letter apparently signed by Rumsfeld … detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods … that allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation,” Reuters reported November 26, 2006.

“Karpinski, who claims to have been unaware of the abuses at Abu Ghraib until pictures surfaced in the press, earlier alleged the existence of the memo in an interview with law professor Marjorie Cohn, now president of the National Lawyers Guild, in August 2005,” Ryan Olden wrote November 26, 2006, in the Jurist. “The former Army Brigadier General has also charged that Rumsfeld further violated the Geneva Convention by ‘ordering us to hold [a] prisoner without registering him… on various occasions.‘”

Karpinski “alleged early last year that the interrogation techniques were approved by top US officials and has testified to that effect in support of a recent bid to have the German federal prosecutor bring war crimes charges against Rumsfeld and others under German universal jurisdiction laws,” Olden wrote.1

Background

Born in Chicago, Donald Rumsfeld received his bachelor’s degree in 1954 from Princeton University, where he captained the wrestling team. After serving three years (1954–57) in the Navy as an aviator, he worked as a congressional aide in Washington, and as an investment banker in Chicago. Rumsfeld was a roommate of Frank Carlucci at Princeton University where he graduated in 1954 with a degree in political science.

In 1962, he won election as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives from the North Shore district of Illinois;[3] he was reelected in 1964,[4] 1966,[5] and 1968.[6]

During his time in the House, Rumsfeld was a close ally of Moderate Republican then-representative Gerald Ford of Michigan. Following Republican defeats in the 1964 elections coinciding with Barry Goldwater’s landslide defeat in the presidential race by incumbent Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson, Rumsfeld led the effort to replace conservative House Republican leader Charles A. Halleck with Ford,[2] which ultimately proved successful.[7] He later reflected in a 2009 interview:[8]

We thought that Gerald Ford would present a face for the Republican Party that would give us a better chance of increasing our numbers. Why be in Congress unless you are striving to be the majority party? Why would you not want to accomplish that? We felt we would have a much better chance with Gerald Ford.

In August 1974, after Nixon resigned, Rumsfeld was summoned back to Washington to head President Ford’s transition team. He then served as Ford’s chief of staff until nominated and confirmed as Secretary of Defense. While at the Department of Defense he campaigned vigorously for increased defense spending, took an active role in Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) with the Soviet Union, and made his own test flight in an early version of the B-1 bomber. Rumsfeld gave up his safe congressional seat the following year to serve at the Office of Economic Opportunity and at the White House in the administration of President Richard Nixon. From 1973 to 1974 Rumsfeld was in Brussels, Belgium, as U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Rumsfeld was the chairman of ALEC’s business policy board in the 1980’s. Rumsfeld said that his interests in economics and government regulation, rather than social issues, led him to become involved with the organization.
