Lt. Gen. David McCloud served as Clinton’s director for the Joint Chiefs of Staff Force Structure, Resources and Assessment Directorate, or J-8, from May 1996 to December 1997. He later became the commander of Alaskan Command and 11th Air Force.
McCloud was killed while he piloted his personal YAK-54, a Russian-built, single-engine acrobatic aircraft. The cause of the crash was reportedly unknown.
Several blogs have printed unsubstantiated claims that McCloud had been part of a group of 24 flag officers that sought to arrest Clinton for treason under the Uniform Code of Military Justice while Clinton was president.
