Portland Bans Urinals to Respect ‘Shared Values,’ Charges Taxpayers $200M. Plus: A Mind-Bending History of Gender Rules

So to make things gender-neutral, the most radically left-wing city in America has reportedly banned urinals from its most iconic building, the Portland Municipal Services Building.

Standing 15 stories high in downtown Portland, Oregon, the building is currently being remodeled, and part of the remodeling involves making its bathrooms gender-neutral.

And it just so happens that in a gender-neutral world, urinals simply cannot exist.

The City of Portland banned urinals in the remodeled Portland Building,” local station KGW reported last week, adding that this means urinals must be banned “even in the men’s room.”

The only good news is that there will still reportedly be at least one set of standard bathrooms for normal people (i.e., the type who believe in biological science).

“We will continue to have gender-specific (male and female) multi-stall restrooms that are readily available to any employee that prefers to use one,” the city’s chief administrative officer, Tom Rinehart, reportedly wrote in an email to employees in February.

“But, there will be no urinals in any restroom in the building. This will give us the flexibility we need for any future changes in signage.”

Of course, no “future changes in signage” would be necessary if the radically far-left city would simply stop catering to the minority of a minority of a minority that is so-called “transgender” Americans.

“I am convinced that this is the right way to ensure success as your employer, remove arbitrary barriers in our community, and provide leadership that is reflective of our shared values,” his email continued.

Apparently, Rinehart believes that his radical city’s “shared values” are that men, women and presumably children are absolutely the same, when in reality they’re different on various levels, as noted in a Facebook post by local conservative radio show host Lars Larson.

“Different plumbing in particular. But I suppose equipping the men’s room with something the ladies don’t get (even though women can’t easily use it) bothers the ‘woke folks,’” he wrote in a stinging Facebook update posted last Friday.

He also criticized claims by city officials that the removal of urinals will save the city money and help protect the environment.

“Some have suggested it’s a cost issue…but that’s nuts,” he wrote. “If you have a men’s room with two toilets and two urinals and you want to match capacity without urinals, you’ll need four toilets, four stalls…more space, more fixtures, etc.”

“Finally, in a place constantly lecturing us about protecting the environment (you know, plastic straws, etc) this will waste a tremendous amount of water. I checked and most urinals take as little as a pint of water per flush (1/8 gallon). Even ‘modern’ toilets flush with more than a gallon of water. Some “no-flush” urinals use no water at all. Multiply this by hundreds of thousands of flushes a year. Figure out how this makes sense.”

But it gets worse.

The building’s 1st, 3rd, and 15th floors will have large multi-stall bathrooms that men and women will use together,” KGW notes. “Over all, there will be 42 ‘all-user stalls’ as the city calls them and 104 gender-specific stalls.”

Given Rinehart’s concerns about “any future changes in signage,” there remains a reasonable chance that the city may one day fully outlaw gender-specific bathrooms. If that were to ever occur, it could pose a significant problem for parents of young children, particularly girls.

Last year President Donald Trump’s administration began investigating whether transgender bathroom policies at a public school in Georgia had led to an act of sexual assault.

“The Trump administration is investigating whether a Georgia school district’s policy allowing transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice led to the sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl,” Politico reported at the time.

“The complaint alleges the girl was assaulted in the girl‘s bathroom at Oakhurst Elementary School by a student who identified as ‘gender fluid.’ The complaint was filed in May with help from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian group that has filed many lawsuits challenging school district transgender bathroom policies nationwide.”

“This situation was both deeply tragic and avoidable,” an ADF lawyer said in a statement. “Schools have a duty to protect the privacy and safety of all students and Decatur Schools clearly failed this young girl. The current approach that many schools are taking of passing these transgender bathroom policies isn’t working; they fail to provide basic privacy or ensure the safety of all students.”

The argument could be made that all public entities “have a duty to protect the privacy and safety of” the Americans who visit their facilities, particularly children.

There are plenty more examples where this came from.

Back in 2015, the University of Toronto was forced to eliminate its transgender bathrooms after a slew of “peeping incidents.”

And back in 2016, the leader of an effort to force officials in Charlotte, California, to implement transgender bathrooms in the city’s public buildings was outed as a convicted and registered sex offender.
