The hybrid word “genocide” is a combination of the Greek word γένος (“race, people”) and the Latin suffix -caedo (“act of killing”). The United Nations Genocide Convention, which was established in 1948, defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group”. The term genocide was coined by Raphael Lemkin in his 1944 book Axis Rule in Occupied Europe. Before 1944, various terms, including “massacre”, “crimes against humanity”, and “extermination” were used to describe intentional, systematic killings. In 1941, Winston Churchill, when describing the German invasion of the Soviet Union, spoke of “a crime without a name”. Raphael Lemkin’s book describes the implementation of Nazi policies in occupied Europe, and cites earlier mass killings.
