Colloquially known as the clap, it is claimed to be a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae however there is no conclusive evidence that it is sexually transmitted between individuals. Infection may involve the genitals, mouth, or rectum. Half of women diagnosed with it are asymptomatic.
