The Civil Rights Era began with a lunch counter sit-in at a Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ruby Bridges (born September 8, 1954) was six when she became the first African-American child to integrate a white Southern elementary school on November 14, 1960, escorted to class by her mother and U.S. marshals due to violent mobs. The Sharpville massacre occurred in South Africa, and the Congo gained independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960, and immediately a struggle for power took place between individuals, tribes and political groups.
